How To: Speed Up the Boot Process posted by webzila on 07-01-2006 22:30
|
|
Windows XP Boot Defrag
Windows XP includes a boot defrag feature that speeds up the start-up process by placing boot files next to each other on the hard drive. By default this option is on, but there have been instances where Windows XP has been installed with the option turned off. To make sure boot defrag is enabled, go to the Registry Editor and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
Note: To open up the Registry Editor click on Start > Run > type regedit > OK
With this key highlighted, look in the Name column on the right side of the window for Enable, and check that the Data value for Enable is set to Y. If it is, the feature is on, and you can close the Registry Editor. If it's not on, right-click on Enable and choose Modify. Change the value to Y, choose OK, and close the Registry Editor. comments: 1

Get Additional Memory (Win 95/98) posted by webzila on 04-08-2006 23:06
|
|
GETTING ADDITIONAL MEMORY
Tip designed for: Win 3.1 / Win 95 / Win 98
The below commands will help allow your computer to load programs into memory more efficiently allowing you to have more memory for MS-DOS programs / games.
Ensure you have the below three lines at the beginning of your config.sys file.
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
By placing the DOS=HIGH,UMB on the second line, this can, in some cases, save memory because it is loading DOS into upper memory before loading the memory manager. Additionally, the first and third lines cannot be loaded into high memory because these lines are the memory managers.
Load all your devices in your config.sys and autoexec.bat into high memory.
Note: To edit the config.sys file click on Start > Run > type in sysedit and click OK comments: 4
